1-O003Planning is underway for the next great Two Sheilas in a Ute outback adventure.
Helen has another couple of months off work, so we’re heading out. This time most likely to Uluru.
I say most likely, because one of the objectives of the trip is to get out of the cold, and believe me, it gets cold at Uluru in June!

It’s not just where you’re going that’s amazing about travel, but also the effect that has on how you see where you’re from.

It seems that even astronauts get the same thrill out of travel that we ordinary mortals do. Check out this amazing video

Sunset through the gum treeI’m off on my great adventure tomorrow, and I can’t wait.

Everything is prepared (almost), so it’s just a matter of packing the car. I’m very nervous – this is my first big trip away without Doc, so I hope I know what to do. It’s also my first time away with a girlfriend who isn’t a camper. The two of us trying to put up a tent each night should keep the countryside amused for days!

For me this is a working trip. I’m off to take photos of the outback, country spaces and country life. There’s a big photo competition coming up I want to enter, and I want some photos to sell (as well as selling some while I’m away).

Road tripI’m going on a road trip!

Doc’s just started a new job (business), so he’s very busy this year. We’re already planning a trip away to the Cape in June, and he can’t take any more time off. So I’m going away with a girlfriend.

I’ve always wanted to go to Broken Hill, and somehow Doc and I never seem to get there.  And I want to find out more about my grandmother’s past, so I’m combining the two – well, if we get that far.

I want to stay “off the beaten track”, and stop along the way wherever takes our fancy. We only have just over 2 weeks, and given that I like to stop a lot to take photos and wander around, we’ll be pressed for time.

Panorama view of Lake Burrinjuck, Murrumbidgee River, NSWAs I sit here, surrounded by rolling hills, on an isolated place beside the Murrumbidgee River where the sound of boats is but a distant lull, I can’t help but think how lucky I am to be here.

For a few years when I was a kid we spent our summer holidays on the north coast of NSW, at Stuarts Point. It was (and still is) a beautiful spot that few people have heard of. Beside the Macleay River it’s a short stroll across the bridge (the same one I broke my arm on when I was 8) and through the sand hills (now covered with vegetation but then just sand) to one of the most beautiful, long white stretches of sand in NSW.

It’s been far too long since we went to the Cape (July-Sept last year), and too long even since we went to the farm (Christmas). We’re not planning another really big trip until next year (hopefully a 6 month odyssey across the top, down the Canning and back – maybe including another trip to the Cape), so in the meantime we decided we need something to keep us occupied.

So we’ve come up with a project for the next twelve months – explore our area, and find the best spots to go for Sunday lunch. Every Sunday (and sometimes during the week if we can do it) we’re going to find somewhere close to home to explore and have lunch. The only rule is that it needs to be somewhere close enough that we can drive, have lunch, look around and drive back in one day – without having to leave home at some ungodly hour of the morning!

Yesterday we went to Shellharbour.

As you can see from my website, I love to travel, and I love to take photos. Combine the two and you have my perfect job – travel photography.

If only somebody would pay me to do it I’d be as happy as the proverbial pig.

Maybe one of the reasons I don’t get paid for it is I’ve never been able to work out exactly what travel photography is.

The best/worst of 2011 lists are starting to come out, so I’ve decided to compile my own personal best list.

It’s not definitive, nor does it really have a theme. It’s just some of the things that I liked, or that annoyed me, in 2011. Any other suggestions are welcome.

The Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia is one of the natural wonders of the world. The largest coral reef, it is an amazing place to dive and snorkel. Photos do not do it justice, but I tried anyway.

We went fishing this morning.

As a vegetarian, fishing is not something I do very often. As a matter of fact, apart from 30 seconds on the Cape, then a fishing charter into the Gulf at Karumba, I can’t remember the last time I went fishing. Probably when I was around 8 years old on holidays with the family.
