The Outdoorsy One came down to stay for the weekend. She was missing her mum and wanted to hang out. So we did.

Saturday was a beautiful day. We got up and sat in the sun having breakfast. I made spiced ricotta, raspberry and hazelnut muffins, which we had with real coffee and champagne (well – I had champagne). I don’t always make muffins for breakfast, but it was a special day with my first born.

The sun trying to shine through the thick fog over the house damSpring is definitely on the way, even if the weather doesn’t always feel like it. The seasons seem to be more marked out in the country, perhaps because you’re surrounded by nature.

We woke up Saturday morning, the fire in the room had gone out and I was cold. It was early enough for the fog to still be thick, but late enough for it to have receded from the house, leaving the sun shining on the veranda. Of course, that’s where we sat with freshly brewed coffee while we watched the fog swirl and float, first one way, then the other, chasing itself up and up until it disappeared into the sky. If only Doc’s fog could be lifted as easily.

We’ve passed the winter solstice which means spring is on its way. To bring some winter cheer and remind us that it does come to an end, here are some photos of a trip we took to the Pilliga Scrub in spring when there was a mass of wildflowers. Whoever said that Australian wildflowers are boring has obviously never been to the Pilliga!

It’s been far too long since we went to the Cape (July-Sept last year), and too long even since we went to the farm (Christmas). We’re not planning another really big trip until next year (hopefully a 6 month odyssey across the top, down the Canning and back – maybe including another trip to the Cape), so in the meantime we decided we need something to keep us occupied.

So we’ve come up with a project for the next twelve months – explore our area, and find the best spots to go for Sunday lunch. Every Sunday (and sometimes during the week if we can do it) we’re going to find somewhere close to home to explore and have lunch. The only rule is that it needs to be somewhere close enough that we can drive, have lunch, look around and drive back in one day – without having to leave home at some ungodly hour of the morning!

Yesterday we went to Shellharbour.
