Darling River campsiteFinally, we’ve set up camp on the Darling River in Kinchega National Park. There’s not another soul around and I can hear the river calling me for a swim. Menindee Lake is behind us, and in an hour or so the sun will go down and it will be time to photograph one of those famous sunsets over the Lake.

That was my impression yesterday – and it hasn’t changed. We’re still here. After a week of camp, pack up and move, camp, sightsee, move, etc we decided to have a lazy day by the Darling.

I love mornings. When I can get out of bed that is.

Even at the beach in summer you can have time and space to yourself. Even the sun puts on a great show for you.

Early morning with a pre-sunrise orange glow lighting through the gum treesI’m sitting here with a cup of coffee watching the sunrise.

One set of Christmas lights are still flashing, though very languidly. Like me, they’re waiting for the sun to recharge their battery, to make them bright again.

It’s peaceful rather than quiet. Despite – or perhaps because of – the lack of city noises, it never really gets quiet in the country. Right now, there are birds singing, and the wind is rustling through the trees.

And it’s cold.
